Renters – Tips When Moving

Are you moving to or from an apartment soon? Do your homework before you pack. Ask the landlord if there are any restrictions on the hours when you can move. Some apartments require moves to be made only at certain times to avoid inconveniencing or disturbing the residents.

Determine where you can legally park while unloading so you don’t have any unpleasant surprises on the day of your move. Find out if you need to use a freight elevator or if there is a special entrance at the side or the back of the building you must use.

If you don’t have a lot of furniture and aren’t moving too far away, you may be able to convince friends, family or neighbors to help you. Ask if anyone is willing to lend their truck or van to your cause. If that doesn’t work out, it’s fairly inexpensive to rent a truck by the hour.

Be sure anyone you enlist to help is trustworthy; someone you know well and are confident will respect your property. Remember, they will have easy access to your valuables and private documents and you may be too busy with the move to notice if something fishy is going on. In fact, you may not notice the theft for weeks or months. By then, it may be too late to pinpoint who took what and when.
